Since its early days as a church plant, all the way back in 1954, The Lord has blessed Sunshine Baptist with generations of members who have faithfully and sacrificially given to disciple new Christians and to maintain the church as a place of worship and community.
Throughout those years, members have, from time to time, recognized the need for additional fellowship and discipleship space. There have been several attempts to address that need, but, in his own sovereign purposes, the Lord did not open the doors for those attempts to move forward.
Then, in late 2020 the Church Council began to sense that God could be opening the door for a new opportunity. New congregational growth brought experienced lay leadership to the church and a renewed passion to see the church grow, and to see it equipped for a new generation of ministry - especially for families with children.
In 2021 all these currents began to coalesce, and the Church Council, Deacons, and Pastor began to prayerfully consider whether God was calling us to step out in faith to build an addition. After many hours of prayer, council meetings, and countless conversations about both the rewards and risks, it was decided to have a fundraising dinner and see whether the Lord would open the door by providing financing to make the project more feasible.
The pledge dinner was held on November 14, 2021, and in a single night the church received pledges totaling approximately 20% of the estimated project budget! We were all amazed at the Lord's generosity! In June of 2022, with the engineering, permitting, and financing hurdles cleared, construction crews broke ground for the foundation.
We know that there is great risk for a small church to take this kind of decision. But, we are also convinced that there is no such thing as living faith where God's people are unwilling to take what seem like huge risks.
What's more, we are absolutely confident that the One who began this good work will see it through to completion. We are relying on Him every step of the way; "He owns the cattle on a thousand hills." When this addition is complete, it will because of Him, from first to last, and it will be for His Glory alone.
It is, after all, His Church, not ours.
"Now, to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:2-21)
